Portal

Every few aeons I write about games that really did it for me. The last one was Quake 4 exactly two years ago.

I probably should have told you previously, that Bioshock is a great game, but it took Portal to get my lazy ass to actually write something. So what's so special about Portal? Well, it's refreshing! I never experienced this nerdy kind of humor in any game! You'll love it, if you like Futurama or "serious" Science Fiction in general.

The gameplay is very smooth; I expected to encounter some artifacts (read: bugs) with this kind freedom the player has, but I didn't. The puzzles could've been a bit more challenging, but on the other hand it was nice not get stuck anywhere. Great game, great story (I'd love to tell you more, but don't want to spoil it). Somewhere in the middle of the game I thought something like "Awesome, Cube as game" - It had such a dense atmosphere. And I miss my weighted companion cube <3

I also played some quick games of Team Fortress 2, which also comes with the Orange Box, and it looked very polished, too. Very cool style and humor. I haven't played Episode One or Two yet, but I can tell you one thing: BUY BUY BUY!

Application Portfolios

Now, that I've been studying at the Hochschule Darmstadt for two weeks, I decided to upload my portfolios. I sent these in for my application some month ago. The two pathways I applied for were Interactive Media and Animation and Game. Both of my portfolios were accepted, but I choose to study Interactive Media in the end.

Interactive Media Portfolio

Animation and Game Portfolio

The forgotten tales of Warsow

Well, it has been over a year, since I last updated this site - lot's of work/real life stuff, yada yada. So, I thought it's time to finally collect some old news!

Some time ago I was asked to help making maps for warsow. Warsow, in case you haven't heard, is a freeware FPS, based on the now open source Quake 2 / QFusion Engine. I was given an unfinished version of WDM1, tweaked the layout a little, added some detail and textures and established the overall look of this map. The screenshot on the right shows the map after I was finished with it. Since then, the map has been overhauled more than once by some other people from the team, and is now definitely worth playing.

Another map I had lying on my HDD was only recently given to the warsow team, in the hope that they can use it somehow. I built the layout from scratch, added some textures and details, and again tried to establish the overall look of this map. I got bored in the middle of the process, so the lighting is far frome done.

Still reading? You should be playing warsow by now!

Land Mark System 3

A new version of my Land Mark System is now available for download. The Land Mark System is a lightweight User Locator-Script written in PHP. It draws a dot for each user on a map. Due to the lack of geo data for other countries, it is only suitable for Germany.

Version 3 features an admin menu and some changes regarding the database layout and user registration. More info and the download is available here (German).

YuckFu! for Gameboy Advance

As promised earlier you can now download the ROM image of my YuckFu GBA port. The ROM works well with VisualBoy Advance, but of course is best played on real hardware.

Grab the ROM image here or visit the YuckFu! minisite for more info and the Windows version.

Update: GBADev.org just released the whole 2004Mbit Compo ROM, including all 10 games. Grab it here!
